Dev Branham has been training and teaching Hunter/Jumper horses and riders since 2004. While having a successful early competitive career, Dev felt there was something missing in his work and that there was more he could offer to his horses and students to help them feel less anxious and more connected in their pursuits. In 2013 Dev discovered Mark Rashid's horsemanship teachings and began studying with him, diving headfirst into the concepts of principle-based horsemanship and softness. In 2018 he became a student instructor with Mark and so began a journey where Dev came to understand that our horsemanship is not a how to manual or any specific gear, but instead the mindful, purposeful, and consistent development of who we are as humans interacting with horses. Through awareness of the horse and situation, awareness of our internal feel and energy and consistent clarity, we are able to offer our best selves to our horses and the world around us. With this offering we develop the relationship and trust necessary to receive all the horse has to offer in return. Dev is excited to share this mindful and principle-based approach to horsemanship and jumping in order to help you and your horse along your journey to a soft, trusting and fulfilling relationship.

Clinic description: Introducing Softness to the Hunter/Jumper World

Friday:  Feeling Better Through Clarity
By helping horses feel better about the questions we ask they are able and willing try and find the answer we seek. We will begin by discussing concepts that help bring clarity to the questions we ask of our horses. These concepts include intention, consistency, simplicity, structure, rider balance and blending. Once we are offering clarity to our horses we will next discuss our awareness and understanding of the horse's response to our questions.

Saturday: Feeling Better Through the Try
The try is when a horse begins to seek an answer to the question being asked. As we become more consistent in our clarity and awareness, we will discover our horse's try also becomes more consistent. Today we will ask questions of the horses in line with troubles that the participants had coming into the clinic and discuss how to guide the horse's try via our intention, structure of aids and internal self control.

Sunday: Feeling Better Through Understanding
Today we will start to see how clarity in our questions and the try in our horses lead to understanding. From this understanding comes the amazing effect that our horses will begin to feel better and safer and hence trust us in any situation. We will discuss how for horses (and humans) learning actually leads to peace of mind! We will also dive deeper into developing the feel in us that we seek from our horse and how doing so allows for more subtle communication.
