Training the Western Performance Horse after the First 60 Days of Riding
UW River Falls faculty member Nathan O’Connor and four of his students riding horses from the Colts in Training Program will demonstrate riding skills used to advance the young performance horse after the first 60 days of training. Topics to be covered will include: introducing the young horse to collection, teaching the hindquarter spin, and how to reduce lean and improve how your horse guides while loping.

Nathan is a faculty member of the Animal Science department at UW-RF. He teaches courses in advanced western riding, colts in training, and equine management. In addition to teaching at UW-RF, Nathan is the faculty advisor to the UW-RF Rodeo Team and faculty advisor to UW-RF Undergraduate Animal Science Students. Nathan has had a life-long interest in horses, and in addition to his academic endeavors, he has had a distinguished career in training and showing western performance horses. He specializes in the training and showing of reining horses.
